Nationwide Building Society is the largest building society in the world and is headquartered in Swindon, England. It has 15 million customers, 20 million accounts and employs 19,000 people across the UK. It is the only UK building society to clear its own cheques, and the only UK financial institution to offer completely fee-free transactions (both electronic and cash withdrawals) worldwide with their VISA branded debit cards. Nationwide was much the largest British building society that did not convert to a bank in the wave of demutalisations that occurred from the late 1980s to the late 1990s.
